MATAR PANEER (COTTAGE CHEESE & GREEN PEAS IN TOMATO GRAVY)

Matar paneer is a popular & most loved North Indian dish prepared from soft cottage cheese (paneer cubes) and green peas cooked in a spiced tomato & onion based gravy. Paneer is a good source of protein & improves bone & teeth health. My son is a great fan of paneer recipes, and matar paneer is his favourite, so once a week, I end up preparing matar paneer at home. This dish taste heaven when served with Jeera rice or Veg pulav.

Ingredients :

200 gms Paneer cubes (Amul)
2-3 medium onion chopped
3-4 medium tomatoes chopped
1 cup fresh or frozen peas
5-6 cashewnut soaked
6-7 flakes garlic
1 inch piece ginger
2-3 cloves
1/2 inch piece cinnamon
1 tblsp coriander seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tblsp Everest chicken masala pd. or any garam masala pd.
1/2 tsp turmeric pd.
1 tblsp red chilli pd
1 tsp kasuri methi
1 tblsp oil
1 tblsp butter

Method :

1. Heat oil in a pan .. saute  cloves, cinnamon, ginger, garlic & chopped onion. Fry untill the onions become light brown.
2. Add coriander seeds, cumin seeds .. saute for a while & set aside to cool.
3. In the same kadai saute the tomatoes till soft.
4. First grind the onion mixture to a smooth paste, then add tomatoes, soaked cashewnuts and grind again.
5. Heat butter in a non-stick Kadai, saute the prepared paste & let cook.
6. Now add the turmeric, red chilli pd, garam masala pd and salt.
7. Add water to make gravy consistency and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
8. Mix in the peas & paneer.
9. Let it cook on slow flame for 15-20 minutes.
10.Lastly add kasuri methi & coriander leaves.
11. Serve hot with Jeera rice, Naan or Roti.

In the UK matar paneer is often referred to as cheesy peas.
