FISH EGG/GABOLI/ROE FRY... A DELICACY FROM MARINE WORLD

Gaboli/Roe are eggs of any fish varieties. They are fully ripened unfertilized egg of a fish. In Mumbai fish egg is commonly known as gaboli ... which is a delicacy. Fish roe is a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids.  I never miss a chance to buy fish eggs if I see it in my local fish market. In India usually fish eggs of Pomfret, Ghol, Rawas, Surmai, sardines, rohu, mackeral can be found .. each of which have a unique flavour and last but not the least the Bhing / Palla gaboli which is the tastiest of all. But my favourite is Pomfret gaboli. Here I have used king fish egg. These eggs contains abundance of essential nutrients which are needed for growth and development. Fish Roe contains vitamins and minerals which help to maintain healthy skin, good vision,  promote growth and bone development.

Ingredients :

250-300 gms Fish egg/Roe
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tblsp red chillie powder
1 whole lime juice
1 tsp vinegar
salt to taste
2 tblsp oil

Method :

1. Clean the fish roe well under running water and remove any membrane on it.
2. Add 1 tsp vinegar to a vessel containing clean water and immerse the fish roe in it for about 10-15 minutes.
3. Later remove and drain the excess water.
4. Marinate the fish roe with the masala ie. red chilli pd, turmeric pd, salt and lime juice for half an hour.
5. Heat oil in a non stick pan. Make sure the pan is large enough to accommodate the entire Gaboli. Slide the roe carefully into the pan. Keep the flame very low. Cover the pan as there are chances of the egg to burst open while cooking. Flip on to the other side carefully.
6. Cook until crisp and golden brown. If you find the centre is still jelly like ... you need to cook slightly longer.
7. Serve hot. Taste simply divine with some steaming hot rice and mangalorean meen rassa.
