JACKFRUIT FRITTERS/ MANGALOREAN PELAKAI GARIGE

Pelakai garige are sweet jackfruit fritters. They taste just yummmm... They are made using ripe jackfruits. They are Crunchy on the outside & soft inside with dominant flavor of the fruit. Pelakai garige makes an amazing snack!  They can be enjoyed as a snack for about 2-3 days... but they taste best while they are fresh. They taste great while they're steaming hot. A visit during this season to mangaluru .. you will surely be offered something made from Jack fruit .. with almost every house having a jackfruit tree in its backyard. Among all the dishes made from the fruit , these fritters are allmost everone's favorite. They are prepared by grinding together rice, ripe jackfruit pieces, jaggery, salt & grated coconut. A smooth-coarse batter is made with almost no usage of water. Then a little semolina is added to the batter to give it a nice texture and to add that crispiness to these fritters. They are then deep fried to make delicious fritters. These fritters are a jackfruit delicacy from Udupi, Mangaluru. Getting the right consistency of the batter is only the tricky part, so that they don't get oily or soggy. Some add chopped cashewnuts or chopped coconut pieces to the batter for that added crunch. The sweeter the jackfruit pods you use .. the better the fritters taste and you need less of jaggery too.

Ingredients :

10-12 ripe jackfruit pods chopped
1 cup rice
1/4 cup bombay rava or any semolina
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup jaggery
3-4 green cardamom powdered
1 tsp crushed black pepper
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
salt to taste
oil for deep frying

Method :

1. Clean and soak rice for 2-3 hours. Drain the water.
2. In a blender grind soaked rice, chopped jackfruit, grated coconut & salt coarsely without water. The consistency of the batter should be thick.
3. Transfer to a bowl and add the semolina, cardamom powder, pepper and cumin seeds. Mix well and keep aside for 10-15 minutes.
4. Heat oil in a kadai ... when hot, drop small roundels into the oil and fry on medium flame till golden brown.
5. Serve for breakfast or as evening snack with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
